When Nerd Battles Go Both Wrong and Right at the Same Time

Our judges.
Our judges.

On Monday night, Vol. 1 Brooklyn presented the first Battle of the New York Nerds.  We thought “hey, this will be a nice way to settle the north vs. south Brooklyn battle with the help of two great local independent media crews”: Overflow Magazine and Greenpoint Gazette.  Good times were indeed had, but it was such a hotly contested outcome with the score being 22 to 22 3/4ths (in Greenpoint Gazette’s favor) that immediately after the event, our judges James Yeh (Gigantic Magazine), Adira Amram, and Sarah Murphy/Sarah Gentile of The Desk Set were ushered out by security, and put in an unmarked van — due to a sea of angry southerners.  All four judges have gone into hiding, and it wasn’t until last night that we got our first dispatch via The Desk Set blog.  We must mention that the fate of the other judges is unclear at this time.

Both teams geeked out with some terrific Brooklyn history, but the Northern gals and guy were just a bit less self-assured, a bit more defensive, and in the end, a whole lot nerdier than their Southern counterparts who were alltogether too cocky and universally male to really nail the nerd thing down.

In the end, both teams were great, everybody in attendance had a good time, and we raised a little cash for Books Through Bars.
