I was an active champion of the freak-folk/New Weird American/Good Beard genre of the mid aughts (which was like what, 3 years ago?).  Most of the big “names” have grown up or gotten stale, but Jana Hunter seems to be quite alright with aligning herself with new projects.

Lower Dens is the project (whether it’s a project or something more full time remains to be seen) in question, and it’s a new outlet for Hunter, who might be one of the most overlooked musicians from the genres mentioned above.

Instead of hazy and haunted lo-fi folk, we get Neu! affected post punk that could also cause you to think you’re listening to softer Sonic Youth moments.

Listen: Lower Dens – “Blue and Silver”
