A Guy on Girls: Shoshanna Ensnared, Haircutters Despaired, and the Return of Laird! (S2/E10, “Together”)
On hearing that this week’s episode was titled “Together”, I assumed a Hannah-Marnie reunion was in order. Hannah’s MSWord declaration that “A friendship between college girls is grander and more dramatic than any romance…” is as close as we got, and perhaps I would have more enjoyed last night’s hit-and-miss season two finale if we’d seen a little more of this drama, and a little more of this sentiment carried into action.
A Girl on Girls: I Know I’m a Mess (S2/E10, “Together”)
In Girls‘ last season’s finale, “She Did,” Jessa included the following prophetic statement in her wedding vows: “Your dreams are not what you thought they’d be.” It made sense then, because in the context of her wedding to Thomas John, we saw a bohemian malcontent settling for a 401K and high-rise apartment. Having spent the past few months taking in the second season, Jessa’s proclamation seems truer than ever. As a finale, “Together” shows us that finding love (or sex, […]
Bernard Malamud’s Shooter Inspiration is Dead
A real life inspiration behind Bernard Malamud’s novel (and total meh movie), The Natural, has passed away at the age of 83. You might not be too familiar with Ruth Ann Steinhagen, but she’s the lady behind the minor character of Harriet Bird, who plays a major part in the story of Roy Hobbes:
Morning Bites: Granta’s 1983 Class, Leaning In with Roxane Gay, Dogs in Hats, and More
Look at the really good looking Granta class of 1983 (via Sarah Weinman). Evan Smith Rakoff has some poetry up at The Nervous Breakdown. Alexis Madrigal talks what it means to be a “digital editor.” And here is Roxane Gay weighing in on Lean In. These William Wegman photographs for Acne are pretty amazing, if you are a fan of dogs in hats. (And isn’t everyone?) Sunday Stories: “Paradiddle”
Paradiddle by Catherine Tung Growing up, Ellie had been the meek minister’s daughter of Reverend Wei. She was half Chinese, wholly pious, distressingly quiet. Ready for something new. When she moved to New York for music school, her bags stuffed with sheet music and bass strings, she was determined to make noise—or, at least, to become associated with noisy people. She’d read about Mona Mackenzie long before they met. Mona had been interviewed in a zine called THE MAKE-UP, where […]
